Most data cabling is sold by companies who do only data cabling, and installed by whoever is available. We come at it from the other direction: we are electricians, we are in the fabric of the building anyway, and running a data cable properly is the same discipline as running a circuit properly.
That matters more than it sounds. The difference between a network point that works and one that does not is almost never the socket on the wall. It is how the cable was routed, how tightly it was bent, what it was run alongside, and how carefully it was terminated.
Wired still beats wireless
Wi-Fi has got very good, and for a phone on the sofa it is all anybody needs. For anything that sits in one place and matters, a cable is still better.
A wired connection gives you the full speed of your broadband rather than a share of it, and it does not degrade because somebody is streaming in the next room, or because your neighbour’s router is on the same channel. It also does not drop out. Desktops, games consoles, smart TVs, printers, CCTV recorders and alarm panels all benefit from being wired, and most of them are never moved.
The usual answer is not one or the other. It is a small number of well-placed wired points, plus access points positioned to give genuine coverage, rather than a single router in the hall doing its best through two brick walls.

Concealed, not stapled
Ask anybody quoting for cabling one question: where is the cable actually going to run?
The cheap answer is up the side of the staircase, around the door frames and along the skirting boards, held on with clips. It works electrically and it looks like an afterthought forever.
We lift floorboards, run cables in voids and behind plaster, and bring them out where they are supposed to come out. It takes longer. It is also the entire difference between a data point that looks original to the house and one that announces itself from the doorway.
Because we are electricians, we are usually under those floors anyway.
Doing it alongside other work
If you are having a rewire, an extension wired, or a security system installed, that is by far the cheapest time to add data cabling. The floors are already up and the walls are already open.
Adding network points during a rewire costs a fraction of what it costs as a standalone job afterwards. It is worth deciding before the plasterer arrives, not after.
Common questions
Cat6 is more than enough for domestic use and will be for a long time. Cat6a is worth it for commercial installs, longer runs, or where you are cabling for the next fifteen years rather than the next five. We will tell you which applies rather than defaulting to the dearer one.
Mostly, yes. Floor voids, lofts and existing routes cover a lot of ground. Where a wall has to be chased we make good afterwards. We will tell you before we start if a particular run is going to be disruptive.
Usually, and usually not with another booster. Most dead spots are solved by putting a wired access point in the right place, which is a cabling job rather than a networking one.
