- If you have separate RCD and MCB devices and the MCB is tripping, unplug all devices that go dead when it trips. If the MCB then resets without tripping, it’s more than likely a defective device/appliance.
- If you have separate RCD and MCB devices and the RCD is tripping, turn off all the MCBs associated with that RCD and check if the RCD now lifts up without tripping. If it does, turn on each MCB in turn, waiting a few seconds in between. When the RCD trips, you have found the faulty circuit. The problem is usually in the kitchen. Unplug all appliances from the dead sockets and see if this stops the tripping. If it does, you can work out which device/appliance is causing the issue.
- If you have RCBOs, then it could either be an overload / short circuit or an earth leakage problem. Follow the steps above to see if you can isolate it to an individual device.
