  • Side alleys or concealed areas
  • Outdoor buildings such as sheds and workshops

Legal and planning considerations

While most security lighting doesn’t require planning permission, you must ensure that your system does not cause a nuisance.  The UK’s Clean Neighbourhoods and Envrionment Act 2005 addresses light pollution – meaning excessively bright or misdirected lights can lead to complaints.

Always:

  • Position lights downwards to avoid glare and light pollution. All our installs are done with this consideration to your neighbours.
  • Choose bulbs with appropriate brightness (measured in lumens).

Never:

  • Let anyone fit a fit a floodlight with an integral PIR attached to the bottom. Why? With these lights, when you tilt the floodlight down enough to not be a nuisance to your neighbours, the PIR gets dragged up behind the light too and won’t be effective. You literally have to cause light pollution for these to pick up motion properly and in our experience, they only last a couple of years before becoming waterlogged and tripping your protective devices off. Only DIY grade fittings are made like this.
