There is a lot to be said about the Normans, OK, they never had Ipads, Phones etc. All the history seems to tell us that they wanted control over every thing and woe beside anyone that should stop them doing what they wanted to do.
Where the cleverness of the Normans shone through though is how they built their castles, the fact that some are still standing today is a testament to how well they were built.
I recall history lessons in the styles and techniques they used and a little bit of watching the Discovery Channel, soon gets you to understand the techniques of the building off their castles.
We know if we built a wall ten foot thick forty feet high, its going to stop most opponents for quite some time. We can all agree with that but there was other ideas involved as well.
The angle of what I am trying to get at is the way they adopted security techniques, the fact that they had a big wall all round them, the fact that the entrance was heavily fortified, The fact that the inner entrances were reduced to create killing zones etc. The extra security after the main gate, all stumbling blocks for any wood-be attacker.
We don’t need to build killing zones in our houses these days, which is great, but the ideas that the Normans created in the designs of their castles we can learn from.
The fact they had a massive walls around the outside is an idea we can adopt, we don’t need big walls but a good privet hedge is just as formidable, the idea is sound to lead a burglar on a route of your choice, not theirs, make it easy for them to come to your house down a route you choose, then, use CCTV, High Quality locks on that door and entrance that they will end up, now you are in control. allowing them to come at any position towards your house, leaves your flanks vulnerable and hard to defend. The Normans had the problem as well as we do these days. The strategies have not changed in defending yourself.
If you have a side gate, Lock it, even if the gate is see through like a wrought iron gate, lock it. You want them only to come to one spot, the front door.
Good security house keeping is very important these days, and to be honest it is easy to adopt, you only have to discipline yourself into routines that will help you become more aware of your surroundings.
I think more security should be considered in the design and layout off boundaries when building houses, it is so nice to have open views to create freedom, these desires far outweigh the abilities to close your borders to any would be trespasser, however, even the smallest of boundary lines like a white picket fence has a degree of security, why bring attention to yourself by jumping over the fence when you can walk through a gate. Let the picket fence be built all the down the path, you are leading them. Now let them only go as far as your front door, and protect that.
You could also take another leaf out of the Normans book, and build little slits either side of the door, so you can shoot arrows and change your guttering to drop boiling oil.:-)
Somehow, I guess this may be frowned upon these days, even if you think it would be perfectly justifiable.
Another great security measure, is to have a border of pea gravel which acts like a moat around your castle. It gives a lovely crunchy feeling when walked upon, but to our predators, it is nightmare as it’s noisy.
