Another day was spent today tracing and undoing a bodge job carried out by an unqualified kitchen fitter. We would say that 90% of house faults such as missing earthing, loose connections, joins buried in plaster or behind worktops and split ring mains are in kitchens due to the fitter bodging his way through an improperly planned kitchen!
When we have one fitted we don’t think about the electrics for some reason. The oven may be in another place. You might have an electric hob fitted. you might have a gas hob with an electric striker. How about a dishwasher and an extractor fan. Also that tall unit your having fitted might cover up an existing socket.
Here are some things to bear in mind….
The kitchen is the area of a property where by far the most electricity is used. Think about these high current using appliances.
Cooker – 32Amps, Electric hob – 32 Amps, Kettle – 13Amps, Toaster – 13Amps, Washing Machine – 13Amps, Dishwasher – 13Amps, Tumble Dryer 13Amps….. The list goes on.
Would you really want all that energy passing through a connector block buried in the plaster behind a tile?
You don’t want your striker for the gas hob bodged into the 32A cooker circuit either.
NEVER EVER cover over an existing socket with a unit – have it properly, permanently sealed and capped off with a maintenance free connection. You can guarantee that if a fault happens its ALWAYS the one behind a unit, or the connection in the wall!
